Weekly program

What does a week at the house look like?

We open five evenings from Wednesday to Sunday, and each has a character of its own. Here is the week, a few practical answers and the rules by which we run it.

The week

Which evening suits you best?

Wednesday17:00

A quiet supper, and blackjack lessons at the corner table once the bell has been struck at half past seven.

Thursday17:00

Whiting night in the dining room, followed by an unhurried Omaha table in the casino room.

Friday17:00

The weekly Texas Hold'em tournament, with the list opening at noon and the first hand dealt at half past seven.

Saturday17:00

The longest supper of the week, then roulette for the whole room until the last bell.

Sunday17:00

An early roast, a gentle table of Seven Card Stud and Five Card Draw, and an early close.

Planning your visit

What do guests ask about the week?

Which evening is best for a first visit?

Wednesday and Sunday are the quietest and the most suitable for beginners. The dealers have more time, the tables are less crowded and you can eat and watch before deciding whether to sit down.

Are you open on Monday or Tuesday?

No. The house is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, which gives the kitchen time to bake, the dealers time to practise and the building time to rest. It also means Wednesday begins with a clean room.

Do the evenings change through the year?

The shape of each week stays the same. The menu changes with the catch and the paddock, and during the cold months the Sunday roast moves earlier so that guests can be home before the roads grow dark.

Can I book a whole evening for a group?

A group of up to forty can book the house on a Monday or Tuesday, with dinner and a private casino room. Ask Felicity Morrison for details, and allow a few weeks for the arrangements. A private evening follows the same order as any other, with the bell at half past seven.

How do I know the program is current?

This page is checked each week and corrected whenever the days change. For a definite answer on a particular evening, ring the front desk after midday and Felicity will tell you at once.

House rules for the week

Which rules apply on every evening?

  1. Doors open at five and the house closes at half past ten, whatever the day of the week.
  2. Every guest in the casino room must be eighteen or older and must show proof of age on request.
  3. Chips are lent for the evening, hold no value and stay in the room when you leave.
  4. Dinner and a seat among the card tables are separate bookings, and each is held for fifteen minutes past the hour given.
  5. Mobile telephones are silenced at the tables and used only in the front hall.
  6. No game is ever played for money, and no prize of any kind is awarded.
  7. Dealers may explain the rules but may not advise on how to play a hand.
  8. Any guest who disturbs another will be asked, courteously, to leave for the evening.
